Remedy:

When changing the engine control unit pay careful attention to the following:

There are different engine control units with different software-versions.

The engine will only run correctly if the correct control unit version is installed.

When the new engine control unit is connected it will learn the immobiliser data from the 'A17 Control unit - Immobilizer' or 'A62 Control unit - Immobilizer & Central locking'. The engine control unit can learn the immobiliser data only ONE time. Once learned, the data can NOT be erased.

If a wrong engine control unit is mistakenly connected and learns the wrong immobiliser data, the damage to the engine control unit is irreparable.

To avoid this, it is recommended:

1) to compare the Identifier (e.g. 8200 XXX XXX) which is written on the 'engine control unit - Diesel, common rail', listed in EPC and readable with TECH 2,

and / or

2) - note the software version (e.g.: A4, 95, ...)of the old engine control unit, - disconnect the 'A17 Control unit - Immobilizer' or 'A62 Control unit - Immobilizer & Central locking', - connect the new engine control unit - compare the software version numbers of the old and the new engine control unit.

If they are the same, the 'A17 Control unit - Immobilizer' or 'A62 Control unit - Immobilizer & Central locking' can be reconnected.

The same problem exists when common rail or complete engine is to be replaced.
