| Complaint: | Rattling noise from timing chain after cold start and even with hot (cooling temperature > 90°C) engine at idle and higher RPM. |

| Cause: | Some chain links may scuff into surface of chain pin causing mentioned complaint. |
| Production: | Only Engines within the following engine range are potentionally affected: Z10/14XEP: as of 19BW6023 (10.07.2003), Z12XE: as of 19CA7292 (02.09.2003). An improved timing chain has be introduced in production as of the following engine number: 19DF9252 (17.05.2004). |
Remedy:
The replacement of timing chains is planned during a customer satisfaction campaign early 2005. The new repair procedure by using an improved open timing chain will reduce the repair effort substantially because removal of timing case is no longer necessary.
Note: Due to the fact that the noise problem will not result in a technical failure please do not replace timing chains on concerned engines until further notice early 2005.
