The battery was discharged / flat due to uncontrolled operation of the radiator cooling fan after extended parking periods (>1hour) with ambient temperatures of < 0° C and cars without A /C.
Cause:
At temperatures < 0° C the engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may in some cases trigger of the radiator cooling fan, this way causing the fan to run until the battery is discharged.
Production Solution:
(ECU) with a manufacturing date before 12 /97 and from 11 /98 on are ok.

In case of complaint as discribed above, identify the ECU.

ECU with a manufacturing date before 772xxx and from 871xxx (11 /98) on are OK.
In case the manufacturing date lies in the range shown above, the Electronic Control Units (ECU) has to replaced, see procedure - "Electronic Control Units, remove and install" of unit "J" in the Service-Instructions for Astra-G.
