Origin of the VAN

Created in 1985/1986, developed by PSA/RENAULT, ISO standard (name of the International Standards Organisation) in 1992

First components in 1989

First applications on vehicles in 1993/1994 on CITROEN XM

The length of the data can vary from 0 to 28 bytes

A byte = sequence of eight bits = eight values of 0 or 1

Operation of the VAN

The VAN has bit by bit arbitration on the whole packet

The maximum transmission speed permitted by the standard is 250 000 bits per second (= 250 Kbits/sec.)

The exchanges are of the type: master-slave - multi-master - mixed

Line faults (short circuit, open circuit) are detected

Operation of the CAN

The CAN has bit by bit arbitration on the identifier field only

The length of the data can vary from 0 to 8 bytes

The maximum transmission speed permitted by the standard is 1 000 000 bits per second (= 1 Mbits/sec.)

The exchanges were of the multi-master type initially; they can also be of the master-slave type

Master-slave exchange

The management (intelligence of the system) is concentrated in a single piece of equipment called the master, while the other items of equipment (slaves) only control the ancillary functions (conventional sensors and actuators)

The slaves cannot send orders

Multi-master exchange

All the equipment on the network has the intelligence to control complex functions
