Miscellaneous recommendations

5-1: компрессор

When a compressor is suspected of being faulty following diagnostics, confirm the fault by carrying out the following operations

ПримечаниеDepending on its position in the vehicle, some of the operations below may be carried out without removing the compressor

Supply the compressor directly with 12 volts: check the clutch engagement

ПримечаниеThe compressor supply lead is fitted with a diode check the clutch engagement (transposing the two wires)

Turn the compressor clockwise, using a spanner, to locate any seizing or sticking points

With the compressor in position

  • Carry out a leak detection test on the compressor itself, on the cover seal and on the rotary seal on the clutch side
  • Check the tightening torques of the connectors or the clamp
  • Check that the O-rings are present on the connectors or the clamp by checking for leaks from the connectors

Ensure that there is no oil on the compressor clutch

  • If oil is present check that it is not engine oil, or power steering fluid..
  • Check the compressor air gap

If, having carried out these operations, no fault has been detected in the compressor, it is probably not faulty

The dehydrator reservoir must always be replaced in the following cases

  • Humidity warning light pink
  • Circuit open and without a cap for more than 5 min
  • Reservoir open to the atmosphere (without a cap) for more than 5 min

The oils used with R134a deteriorate very quickly when in contact with atmospheric humdity

Never leave a container open and use new containers if possible

5-5: lubrication of the seals

When working on the connectors, always fit new seals and lubricate them with compressor oil

6-1: role of the pressure switch

The pressure switch is a safety unit, fitted to the high pressure (HP) section of the circuit, which has three functions

6-2: контур низкого давления

The pressure switch suppresses compressor operation when the pressure falls below 2,5 bars

This protects the compressor from seizing caused by inadequate oil circulation due to insufficient refrigerant (probably caused by leak)

6-3: контур высокого давления

The pressure switch suppresses operation of the compressor when the pressure exceeds 26 bars (this protects the components from excess pressure)

6-4: fan unit control

It engages the fan(s) at high speed when the pressure reaches 19 bars in the case of R12 or 17 bars in the case of R134a

This improves the refrigerant condensation function under certain conditions and increases air conditioning performance

Role of the coolant thermostat (BITRON)

7-1: описание

The coolant thermostat is an electronic instrument which, in conjunction with an engine coolant temperature sensor, fulfills the following functions

  • Control of the fans via relays
  • Illumination of the warning light
  • Cut-off of the air conditioning via a relay
  • Gives engine hot information to the vehicle air conditioning unit

7-2: effects on air conditioning

Depending on version, the coolant thermostat suppresses the engagement of the compressor

  • When the engine temperature is not high enough
  • When the engine temperature is too hot (usually, above 112 °C)
