Subject:
Altered Toothed Belt Assembly Sequence.
Vehicles:
All above vehicle types with V6 DOHC petrol engines (X 25 XE and X 30 XE).
Condition:
During Model Year '97, various alterations have been introduced to the toothed belt drive of the V6 DOHC petrol engine. These improvements serve to reduce noise and extend the toothed belt change interval to 120. 000 km / 80. 000 miles / 8 years - see also TI - C - 79, A - 128 with date of edition 8 / 96.
The individual alterations:
· Front toothed belt cover improved in area of coolant pump
· New toothed belt tension roller with additional front flanged wheel
· Modified toothed belt tension roller base plate (code letter E)
The procedure for installation of the toothed belt is therefore altered, as described below.
Remedy:
Toothed Belt, Install
Contrary to the previous assembly sequence, the introduction of the toothed belt tension roller with front flanged wheel means that the toothed belt is now installed clockwise - see illus. G 3291.
This is necessary, as the toothed belt can no longer be pushed onto the toothed belt tension roller from the front.
Once the toothed belt has been placed over the toothed belt drive gear and fixed in place with KM - 800 - 30 (8), the following assembly sequence must be observed:
1 Toothed belt tension roller
2 Camshaft pulley "1" cylinders 1 - 3 - 5
3 Camshaft pulley "2" cylinders 1 - 3 - 5
4 Upper toothed belt guide roller
5 Lower toothed belt guide roller
6 Camshaft pulley "3" cylinders 2 - 4 - 6

Note:
Vehicles / engines up to and including Model Year'96 can also be retrofitted for the extended change interval of 120, 000 km / 80, 000 miles / 8 years. A precondition for this is the use of the new toothed belt tension roller with base plate (code letter E) and the new toothed belt approved for it.
The code letter of the toothed belt tension roller base plate is located - as shown in illus. G 3292 - between the right fastening bolts.
Important:
It is vital that the relevant toothed belt tension roller with base plate be installed with each toothed belt - see parts table.

The change of the toothed belt must be documented on the toothed belt sticker, available from Portica with the art. no. 95 178.
Time Allowance:
