| Complaint: | Engine oil is slow to enter sump during refill or after engine is switched off. |
|---|---|
| Cause: | Design of internal circulating oil flow. |
| Production: |
Remedy:
Please ensure that all relevant staff are aware of the special service requirements that need to be observed when checking the engine oil level on these engines during routine inspection or after engine servicing.
If an engine has been run to operating temperature it is essential that a minimum 'rest' period is observed of 15 minutes before an accurate measurement can be taken from the oil dipstick. This should obviously performed with the vehicle horizontal.
It is also essential that when re-filling an engine with oil that the correct level is ascertained using only the oil dipstick after a similar 'rest' period before starting the engine.
Oil will naturally accumulate in the top of the engine during the re-fill process and needs time to drain down into the sump. This condition is exaggerated if the oil is machine pumped. Failure to observe these requirements may lead to residual oil being present in the fill pipe, which is then drawn into the breather on initial start of the engine. This oil will subsequently prime the intake system, which can lead to engine damage.
It should be noted that all these engines are also particularly susceptible to uncontrolled throttle if overfilled with oil.
Therefore as the correct level is so critical we recommend that only the engine oil dipstick is ever used to safely confirm that the correct amount of engine oil has been delivered into the engines sump before starting the engine.
