Subject:Turbocharger - Oil leakage
Models:Engines:Option:
Astra-G 2000...,Zafira 2000...Z20LET,Z20LET
Complaint:Slight oil leakage on the turbocharger and/or oil smell in the passenger compartment.
Cause:Because of the high thermal stress and fast running of the turbocharger shaft, there is no radial sealing ring installed in the turbocharger. The tightness of the different sectors (charger-, bearing- and turbine housing) of the charger is guaranteed by a pressure difference and a labyrinth seal. An extremely driving can cause a light negative pressure and result in a slight oil leakage.

Remedy:

In case of customer complaint according the slight oil leakage (drop formation or oil smell in the passenger compartment) please note the following diagnostic advice:

- check if the intake tract and blowby system shows any deviation. Any modification (e.g. installation of not original parts) results in a pressure change in the concerned system which could cause a oil leakage.

- Investigation during idle with the exhaust-gas exhaustion of the garage could cause this leakage through the exhaust-gas exhaustion of the garage. The investigation of the leakage should be made after a test drive. Wipe away the oil dust from the turbocharger. Make a test drive on a highway (15 minutes at least). If there is a slight oil leakage (drop formation or oil smell in the passenger compartment) after this test drive, the seal of the turbocharger is defective.

- It is not allowed to retighten the screws of the turbocharger.

- Slight leakage will not result in damage.

The turbocharger should not be exchanged without exact diagnostic and confirmed complaint.

Possible causes for oil leakages: Remedy:

1. Too high oil pressure 1. Check oil pressure valve according TIS

2. Crankshaft ventilation system defect, 2. Check Crankshaft ventilation insufficient conncetion between system (valve cover, pipes crankcase and air intake manifold and hose)

3. Modification of the air intake and/or 3. Check for any modification exhaust system resulting in pressure (e.g. exhaust system, Tuning deviation causing oil leakages - verify SPS data in ECU) -> ensure original condition

4. Turbo shaft sealing defect 4. Only after a detailed analysis and checking of item 1-3, the turbo charger should be replaced
