| Subject: | Trailer hitch with 7- or 13 pin socket - Wrong indication of bulb control |

| Vectra-C 2002...2003,5 | All |
| Complaint: | In some cases the bulb control does not correctly check the reverse and rear fog lights at trailer. - wrong bulb warning - does not correctly identify removal of trailer (after ignition switched-on), removed trailer will not be recognised until fog light and reverse light have been switched-on first time - turn signal lights flash with double frequency although the concerned bulbs are ok |
|---|---|
| Cause: | The bulb control "after ignition on" via check control is not disengageable and tries to identify switched-off trailer reverse and fog light even with diagnosis at REC. |
| Production: | Introduction of REC's with modified software since MY 2003,5 (Not usable for vehicles before MY 2003,5 !). |
Remedy:
In case of customer complaint replace the wiring harness of trailer hitch and install an additional bulb plate with two bulbs and two relays. Parts can be ordered via TAC/ETAC.
Important: This remedy relates to 13-pole trailer sockets only. When using a 7-pole trailer, the customer needs to retrofit a 13-pole plug, or use a 13- to 7-pole adapter, at his own expense.
Note: The customer has to be informed of this before installing this remedy.
Functional Description:
The bulb control can check trailer fog light and trailer reverse light in switched-on and switched-off condition.
The remedy will modify this function:
- Rear fog light and reverse light - switched-off: Inside the vehicle 2 additional bulbs will be switched into these electrical circuits. Their electrical resistance will simulate functional bulbs at the trailer. These bulbs will not light-up because the electrical pulses of the bulb check control are not sufficient. So the bulb control will not create a bulb warning if one of these 2 trailer bulbs is missing or defective.
- Rear fog light and reverse light - switched-on: In this case the 2 additional bulbs will be switched-off. Now the bulb control can identify missing or defective bulbs at the trailer and will create a bulb warning if necessary. In this case the warning bulb will be illuminated as long as the concerned bulb has been switched-on. (concerns switch of rear fog light and gear lever in reverse).
Note: The customer has to be informed accordingly.
Working procedure:
1. Disconnect battery. 2. Remove load compartment cover. 3. Remove inner panelling of lower rear end panel
- see working procedure "Lower Rear End Panel Inner Panelling, Remove and Install", Group "C", Service Instruction Vectra-C/Signum (Document-Number 00602407)
4. Remove wiring harness of trailer hitch. 5. Install new wiring harness of trailer hitch.
6. Connect wiring harness of trailer hitch to additional bulb plate (Picture II).
Note: Picture II shows the rear side of the additional bulb plate.
Connections: - 2x plug yellow (1) and (3) to bulb socket - white cable (4) to short pin at bulb socket - blue cable (2) to short pin at bulb socket
Note: The bulb plate has to be slipped over the cross member at the rubber-coated slot (arrow).
7. Unscrew lower nut of left tail lamp (Picture III, 1).
8. Install additional bulb plate (Picture IV, arrow).
Important: The bulb plate has to be inserted in a position, which ensures tight and rattle-free mounting between rubber-coated slot and cross member.
9. Fasten additional bulb plate (Picture V, 1).
Important: Ensure that no wiring is routed between the bulb plate and the vehicle body.
Note: If necessary – pull-out the wiring harness of trailer hitch carefully.
- route the wiring harness away from body - move additional bulb between wiring harness and body - install additional bulb plate to the bolt of the tail lamp - tighten nut
10. Check cable routing of additional bulb plate (Picture VI).
Important: - check 4x cable for correct position - ensure that there is sufficient distance between bulbs and body.
11. Install 4x ground cable to ground bolt (Picture VII, 1).
Important: Ensure bright surface at ground bolt and nut. The wire connections have to be positioned offset in order to achieve good contact between the surfaces of the eyelets!
- tighten nut 6 Nm
12. Install new wiring harness of trailer hitch to REC (Picture VIII, 1).
13. Fix and insulate new wiring harness of trailer hitch.
Important: After installation of the new wiring harness of trailer hitch the free routed cables have be insulated with insulation band and have to be fixed. Ensure that no wires are routed behind the bulb plate! Ensure that all wires are well routed, fixed and protected and that damage and rattling noise will be prevented.
14. Install inner panelling of lower rear end panel
- see working procedure "Lower Rear End Panel Inner Panelling, Remove and Install", Group "C", Service Instruction Vectra-C/Signum (Document-Number 00602407)
15. Install load compartment cover. 16. Connect battery. 17. Program volatile memories. 18. Program control unit.
Note: In the REC the trailer bulb control for rear fog light and reverse light have to be programmed into mode "available" with Tech2.
